VMAs 2020 Fashion Continues to Delight
I love the VMAs. They are always good for a moment, a laugh, or a jaw drop. When I saw the promotions leading up to the event, I was at first stoked. Then I quickly remembered of course the show will be different. Everything seems a bit different in the pandemic
The show – must? – go on. Part of me likes that they figured out a way to make it work. The other part of me is curious about the reported lack of Covid-19 isolation post travel protocols. Trying not to let that get in the way of the fun – as I sit safely in Calgary, far, far away from the show – why not enjoy it?
The best thing for me about the VMA’s has always been the fashion. Please note that I say fashion and not style deliberately. To me, it’s the most varied spectrum of looks all year long. Thinking more on it, I noticed most of the fashion gags displayed on the show over the years is by fashion daring women: Britney, Jlo, Lil’ Kim, Lizzo, Madonna, Miley, Nicki Minaj, TLC, the list goes on.
I love this. I love that the fashion for the event is a bit kooky and often messy. On a night like the VMAs, the expectation is not necessarily to have a look that will stand the test of time, rather, it’s about expressing something and pushing more, than say a look at the arguably outdated Grammy Awards. And don’t get me started on some of the boring Hollywood big event looks that make the rounds outside of music.
As musicians and entertainers, part of their job is to entertain. Turns out I still want that entertainment to extend to the red carpet – or in this year’s case – a socially distanced photo wall.
The VMAs seem like a bit of a warm up as we head into film festival (partial or modified) season and the upcoming Emmy’s. What will these events all look like from a pandemic point of view and selfishly, when will you show me the fashion?
Back to the VMAs, let’s keep it simple. Let’s focus on the fashion. When it comes to the looks of the night, I’ll share my three favourites: Best dressed female, best dressed male, and a best dressed wild card
For the gents, I have to go with Machine Gun Kelly’s fabulous pink on pink suiting. Yes yes yes. I love when a fella comes in with a look that not only fits and flatters, it always shares a story about who he may be. My interest is piqued. Honourable mentions for The Weeknd and Jaden Smith’s sweater.
For the ladies, I was delighted to see Lady Gaga back in those stupid, yet iconic platform boots and masks after mask. It’s the details with her; she ever seems to phone it in. I appreciate her superfluous effort. Love her green. LOVED. Which leads me to my honourable mention of Nicole Ritchie, also in green.
For a wild card, I give it to Maluma in his satin Versace. Those boots, those chains, and those teeth. Thank you for your complete ensemble, good sir.
