TMI: Half-Baked Stylish Thoughts from My Imaginary Velour Draped Soap Box
It’s not often that I find myself at a loss for words. Maybe it’s the looming autumn, perhaps work is taking a giant share of my mental load, or maybe I’m entering a new phase of this pandemic. All could be true at the same time. More simply put, I don’t have something succinct to share with y’all.
That said, I DO have a tonne of half-baked thoughts that inevitably impact my point of view on fashion and how that will evolve my approach on style. In no particular order – because as mentioned before I can’t even – here’s a statement followed by a sneak peek of what I think I mean by said statement.
Having difficult conversations about privilege and racism among white people is difficult.
I will continue to work both inwards and out.
How would I feel if I stopped collecting, sharing, and using loyalty points all together?
Goodbye "buy x and get one free” coffee cards? Politely saying no when salespeople ask if I am a member of their loyalty program? Would I feel freebie shame? Or would I feel free to not have items in my wallet, car (hello McDonalds coffee seven sticker packs), and email inbox ? Or, back again, would the savings FOMO take the drivers seat?
The phrase “tomboy” is done.
As society progresses, we’ve started to tackle outdated and limiting gender statements like “bossy” for assertive young girls. Describing children as either “tomboys” for girls who aren’t expressly interested in traditionally feminine activities is as outlandish as assuming all little boys must be rough and tough, and “boys will be boys” sporty. And ps. There are only two gender expressions in these scenarios? Bah ha ha.
The latest season of ‘Love Island’ will either mentally save me or destroy me.
Seeing beautiful people, in full glam mode, get to not only meet but also get to know one another in a pressure-cooked setting in shiny Las Vegas is just wonderful. Cue the tingles. I hope I don’t get disappointed.
Just because something was very common to say ten years ago, it may not be relevant now.
Sometimes you could benefit from letting shit go. A long-time favourite fashion content creator - Man Repeller - has been renamed to simply Repeller (in the months since the founder and former CEO Leandra Medine stepped down.) I love an evolution and transparency to boot.
What are people going to do with all the sweatpants they’ve been wearing in the pandemic?
Asking for a friend.
What fashion will actually excite me this fall in this world state?
Again, asking for a friend.
It’s never too late or too ingrained to change for the better when you truly understand the pains of systemic racism.
The Chicks are still thriving.
What’s the better hanger: crystal style or black velvet style?
The black velvet ones are lower profile thus you can get more in your space, but they suck with pants and skirt as they leave a crease wherever you fold the item over. The crystal pant and top ones I use on sets for costumes are great, except they are bigger, bulkier, and don’t do well in the cold. Maybe one for the home and one for work? Seems like unnecessary duplication.
This weekend’s Emmy’s got-me-so-curious for whatever the Zoom Red Carpet adjacent moments may be.
Seriously, are we seeing formal wear? Leisure? Both? Activism T shirts? Something else?
Wearing a mask and keeping distance is a sign of respect for the community.
