MORE TO IT
MORE TO IT
It’s rarely just fashion. What about strategy? What about the meaning? What about the person wearing it? See, for me, there’s more to it.
Dig in with me one fabulous blog post at a time.

What We Wear When We are Home
I’ve been home ill with a cold and done something I don’t typically do. I am wearing tights , tonnes of uncoordinated layers with no regard for the look. See dressing with intention is a huge yet simple daily joy of mine. But when I’m under the weather, and I am, I can’t even. This got me thinking about what we wear around the house and what that may say about us.
Holiday Spirit Through the Eyes of University Students
This past weekend I attended two events requiring holiday fashion with a slightly formal dress code. ‘Tis the season. One was a corporate event. It was lovely but there’s not much noteworthy to share. The other was a student how-to fashion show where I showed looks and explained etiquette and fit. The idea is that you hear from those in the know so that you don’t make a fool – or dress like one - when you start your career.
When Did Black Friday Become a Canadian Thing ?
Is it just me or is Black Friday creeping into Canada retail more and more? Our border buddy’s influence is always there. But in the game of retail it’s more than present; it’s strong.
Taking Back Beach Bodies
As a kid, there were very few phrases more exciting than, "Make sure you pack your swim suit." I would squeal with delight with the thought of fun in the water. I love to swim. I love water sports. I love hanging out by the water. It's all good. Be it the pool, the beach or a hot tub I was game. I am still game. Water aside, as we grow older the swim gear seems to turns into more of an exercise in anxiety than joy.
Remembering War Heroes Through Service Uniforms
Remembrance Day is sombre day. Leading up to the 11th, there is pride filling my heart and quiet reflections in my mind. As I thought about the history, I got to thinking about the uniforms of the effort. Who made them? How many were made? And what impact on fashion did it leave?
Why Are We Hurt When Creatives Leave Fashion Houses?
Over the past few week a couple heavyweights have announced their departure from their current posts. One was fired: Alber Elbez (Lanvin) and another quit: Raf Simons (Dior). It’s sad to see them both go. But why, exactly, are they leaving us?
13 Alternative Halloween Costumes Ideas
Halloween is a fantastic time of year. You get to dress up and pretend you’re someone else for a night all the while stuffing your face with garbage treats and sweets. Sounds great. But what shall you wear? If you’re like me and dressing as a sexy kitten/mouse/first responder/superhero won’t do here’s a few ideas that you should be able to round up at a relatively low cost.
Goodbye Old Friend
It’s a sad day. One of my saddest. I must say goodbye to someone I am not ready to give up on. I am saying farewell to someone who has left too soon and forever. My beloved beaded leather wrap ankle strap sandals are long past expiry. It’s time for me to let them go. I will ask you all to indulge me in a moment of fashion silence.
PARKLUXE 2015: Who is More Basic?
One thing I look forward to in fall is going out on the town. Summer can be so hectic and hard to coordinate schedules. The fall seems to bring people back to our city. Last weekend a few friends and I went out to PARKLUXE 2015 Calgary. This time around I had adjusted my expectations on the fashion presentations and instead, focused on the crowds. I wanted to take in what the people were wearing from their own wardrobes.
#AskHerMore at Toronto International Film Fest
September is fashion frenzy. Every year I get to savour fashion weeks and film festivals in equal measure. I’ve already shared my thoughts on New York Fashion Week so it’s time for Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). As I leafed through the coverage, I was drawn to one topic. Have you heard about #AskHerMore?
It’s Time for #PlusIsEqual at New York Fashion Week
It’s that time again. It’s New York Fashion Week. While the streets are flooded with the usual fashion community, a newer movement, too, is hitting the streets. Designers, models, stylists and supporters flooded Times Square for the #PlusIsEqual Lane Bryant event. The campaign is calling for support in representation of all sizes of women in fashion. Excuse the forthcoming location pun, but I think it’s much overdue in terms of time.
Fashion Profile: Miley Cyrus at the 2015 VMAs
I look forward to the MTV VMAs every year as it wraps up the summer and gives us a reason to clean our pallets for the fall. The show is a bit of a free-for-all. It can get messy. It’s so entertaining. Plus, from a style-watch perspective, no real spoilers here, people tend to dress like assholes. At the VMAs, celebrities dress to be seen, or if they do not, they learn on the tabloids come Monday, that they don’t exist.
