Each year fashion people salivate at the prospect of commenting on the hits and misses of Hollywood’s elite on the red carpet. Too much this, not enough that, and the sweet spot in between can cement a celebrity look in the fashion archives forever. Or until another big event in our ever changing news cycle sweeps us away.

Oh what a whirlwind the Hollywood award season has been. The final flourish in the awards show calendar, as always, are the Academy Awards. This special night is reserved for the voter-deemed best of the year. Each nominee is wriggling in his/ her/their seats hoping to take home that golden Oscar. Lucky for us, fashion friends, a big part of the evening is what the stars rock on the red carpet.

The major awards shows of the season wrapped up on Sunday night in an astonishing fashion. We are all now aware of the Academy Awards Best Picture envelope mix-up that eventually got straightened out and granted to the Moonlight team. Phew. Drama aside, my favourite part of the night, of course, was what the stars wore.

Leading up to this year’s Academy Awards the chatter was all about #OscarsSoWhite. After the nominations were announced in January, many felt that many deserving movies, and actors, were left out. The immediate #OscarsSoWhite reaction was trending soon after the nominees were announced. 

Much anticipation builds about who will wear what to the Oscars is the norm come February... While I could provide my arguments for the best and worst dressed, I choose to focus on some on the more modest heroes of the Academy Awards: the costume designers. Bloggers, gossips and grocery check out magazines tend to focus on the big names that are up front and centre. Rather than spend more time arguing with the masses on who wore the best version of the body-con blush strapless, I chose to spend time learning and admiring the work of the costume designers.
