TMI: Stopping to Smell the Roses

My a-type personality has proven helpful in many ways. I can colour sort three racks of clothing with oodles of garments faster than I can make a grilled cheese. My template building skills should warrant another side hustle. And former roommates have told me after living with me at first it’s a bit like living in a beautiful prison, but all of the order and systems and organizing start to feel like home after a while.

Stockholm syndrome jokes aside - though a dear friend did tell me that - the downside to all of that order is that there is less appreciation for letting things lay for a bit. Let loose. Try not being so ambitiously disciplined. Just chill.

Sometimes to get to where you’re going it’s nice to look back and see how far you’ve come, baby. I want to take some time today to share my gratitude. Years ago when I started my business I had all these dreams. Some of which have come true - dressing people in their everyday lives; some were total shit - Ha! Having a store front in this economy? I’m a comedian; and so many more are still in progress - cue Canada’s version of Queer Eye that include one blonde prairie gal style guru? This little schmo on the prairie will keep on dreaming.

Sometimes to get to where you’re going you have to leave it all behind. I left a lucrative career with lots of perks and bonuses and advancement opportunities to spend day after day shopping for the ideal pair of grungy camouflage pants for a particular character. It’s amazing how when you do what you want to do, no part of the job is too mundane or silly.

Sometimes you need to appreciate what’s right in front of you. Seeing a persons face light up when they see clothes that fit, flatter, and make them feel good feels better to me than any fancy work meeting ever did.

Sometimes you have to tell it like it is even though it seems the total opposite of what you should do. Watching people laugh as I tell them that the best way for them to find their personal style is to stop shopping. Seriously, stop. Yes, I know I am a professional shopper but I urge listeners to first see what you already have in your closet and what emotions and memories are brought up. No credit card swipe can grant you lasting introspection. Trust.

Sometimes you just have to stop and smell the roses. I am working on valuing taking time to not say anything new or push any agenda. Thanks to those who have been a part of this grand ‘ole tour thus far. See the rest of you soon or never. Cool either way. Rather than think about that, I’d like to be here, today, for a minute with y’all - or just my Mom who is my best reader - and try to soak it all in.

At least until my alarm for my next appointment goes off…

Sarah, stop it.
